So my devoted readers may remember that back in November of 2011 I wrote a blog post about why I tweet almost daily a reminder to be nice. It has been over two years and I am still trying to tweet on a daily basis to be nice to all. I thought it was worth revisiting the topic. If nothing else just to reinforce the importance of being nice.
A mentor of mine many years ago challenged me when I am having a hard time to phrase my inner monologue in a positive way. Instead of saying “I eat too many deserts and I need to stop”, I should phrase it as “I will eat more vegetable and fruits.” List what the positive action is to be, not the denial of the negative action.
It is the behavior or action I hope to see, I just ask for it directly. Instead of saying, “I don’t want Vanilla ice cream” I am asking, “May I please have Chocolate ice cream”.
A friend asked me if I was just reiterating Wheaton’s Law of “Don’t be a Dick”? Yes, it is very important to not be a dick. Too often most people do not know the backstory and reason for the creation of Wheaton’s Law. It actually comes from a very good sentiment and desire so to say I am just reiterating Wheaton’s Law is fine with me. Truth be known I didn’t know of Wheaton’s Law until after I started the daily nice tweets.
I also will send out the Tweet of Nice if I found myself getting frustrated or annoyed. It is a little moment of focus toward being nice.
Thank you for reading this blog entry. Please take a deep breath and smile knowing that it was time well spent. Now go forth and spread joy.
